What is Multiparametric Prostate MRI ?

Multiparametric Prostate MRI is the most advanced imaging method for evaluating the prostate, and it has become increasingly popular worldwide in the past decade. In this method, additional sequences are taken alongside the standard MRI sequences, allowing for a more detailed assessment of the prostate. The procedure is non-invasive, does not involve radiation, and is painless. A specialized radiologist evaluates the MRI images to provide detailed information about the prostate.

Advantages of Multiparametric Prostate MRI

  1. Most Sensitive Imaging Technique for Detecting Prostate Cancer: Multiparametric MRI is the most sensitive radiological method for detecting prostate cancer.
  2. Early Detection of Prostate Cancer: It allows for early-stage detection of prostate cancer in men with elevated PSA levels or a family history of prostate cancer, who are at higher risk.
  3. Guides Prostate Biopsy: Prior to a prostate biopsy, it locates the exact area of a prostate tumor. This enables a targeted biopsy (fusion biopsy) from the correct site, ensuring a more accurate diagnosis.
  4. Reduces Unnecessary Biopsies: If no abnormal findings are detected during the multiparametric MRI, it reduces the likelihood of performing unnecessary biopsies on patients.
  5. Guiding Biopsy in Suspicious Cases: In cases where the biopsy results are normal, but PSA levels are elevated, multiparametric MRI can identify suspicious areas within the prostate. This allows for targeted biopsy under ultrasound guidance, improving the accuracy of the biopsy and preventing the possibility of missing cancer.
  6. Tracking Post-Treatment Patients: For patients diagnosed with prostate cancer who are under surveillance without surgery or radiation therapy, if PSA levels begin to rise, multiparametric MRI is used to visualize the prostate. Based on the MRI results, treatment plans may be adjusted.

How Long Does a Multiparametric Prostate MRI Take ?

The duration of a multiparametric prostate MRI is approximately 30-45 minutes. After the procedure, patients can return to their daily activities. The radiologist will evaluate the MRI images, and the MRI report will be provided to you within a few days.

What Preparations are Needed for a Multiparametric Prostate MRI ?

You should come to the procedure on an empty stomach. No other special preparations are required.

Is Medication Used During the Multiparametric Prostate MRI ?

During the procedure, a contrast agent is injected into the vein via a catheter in your arm. This contrast substance helps enhance the images, allowing for a better assessment of the prostate. No incisions are made in the body, and no foreign objects are introduced into the body during the procedure.
